He doesn’t remember where he read of the idea, but in the late 70’s he started holding home matches with the gym lights off except for a single light focused on the mat that was a highlight for a lot of kids, they wanted to wrestle under the light, and they knew they had to earn it by making the varsity lineups.
It’s a big deal. We didn’t want it to be just a contest. We wanted to create fan fare, some people accused us of trying to intimidate the visiting team. But we weren’t trying to intimidate anyone. What we were telling them was, this is what you should be doing, giving your kids something like this.
